Artist Statement
This hat is in homage to the first celebrity milliner to Queen Marie Antoinette of France, Marie-Jeanne "Rose" Bertin. Rose would take weekly meeting with the young queen to discuss her hair, fashion and of course hats. Rose was even called the "Minister of Fashion" in the Parisian courts. Marie-Antoinette, with Rose to guide her, were the trend setters at the time.
When the Milliners Guild first introduced the idea of creating a window display in homage to Rose Bertin, I knew immediately I wanted to make a tricorn hat as it would be a lovely utilization of both my skills as a milliner and hat maker.
The open crown was shaped and the brim was trimmed by hand to form my favourite scallop style and ribbon was edged along the brim and hand stitched. As my design featured roses in honour of Rose Bertin, it was only fitting to have a pleated rose the centre of the cockade ribbon. I wanted the viewer to feel that that there was a climbing rose garden on the hat, so I meticulously cut and assembled lace of leaves to climb around the brim of the hat. As the Marie-Antoinette era was very opulent and whimsical, I added pearls and beads on and around the lace which help depict movement. There is a single pink rose made of silk satin ribbon that sits on the back of the tricorn hat.
